The laboratory includes new equipment allowing multi-scale mechanical testing from macroscopic to microscopic length scales. Standard testing techniques, conducted under static load testing, include compression and tensile testing, three/four point bending testing or cyclic testing, and allow to investigate tissues in macroscopic scale. The laboratory is equipped with systems MTS MiniBionix 858, MTS Synergie 100, MTS Tytron 250. Furthermore, during testing video extensometers or 3D Digital Image Correlation System DIC Q400 (DANTEC Dynamics) can be used allowing contactless displacement measurements.
Furthermore we can conduct analysis of the structural components of the soft tissue at the microscopic level under static loading with use of biaxial microtensile tester. During the test it is possible to observe structures under differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy in order to obtain real-time correlation between physical parameters (force, displacement) and structural changes in the material. These tests are particularly beneficial to characterization of subsequent phases of changes, for example in the extracellular matrix. In hard tissue research we mastered microindentation testing on single elements of the trabecular and cortical bone tissue carried out on CSM MicroCombi Tester.
The advanced microscopic imaging allows to capture images of tissue structure with high resolution. Three-dimensional imaging and histomorphometric analysis is done with high resolution X-ray tomography SkyScan1172, Brucker. Use of Phenom ProX desktop scanning electron microscope allows sample’s surface imaging, while its structure can be physically examined and elemental composition determined by X-ray analysis.
